Re: BCC - Worthiness vs. Boundary

Is it possible to create a place (school/ward/whatever) with certain outward standards and yet no self-righteous judgement? I suppose it is theoretically possible, but I don't think its going to be our church institution (in the near future). Our theology rests on us being "chosen" or better then e...

Re: Testimony, Blessings, and Internal Locus of Control

Was not until recently that I heard the idea of the "Prosperity Gospel", which I don't think would be unique to our church, but is a philosophy and mindset that if you do the right things you will be blessed in life. I think the idea might stem from Karma? But it was only recently that I started lo...

Re: Which Hand for Sacrament - LDS Living

Does it seem to others like back in the 1940s and 50s there was more need for rigidity and structure and exactness in obedience in the church? And today's culture realizes it doesn't always work well...so we need more of these LDS Living articles and other comments to help reassure us it is not so ...

Re: Which Hand for Sacrament - LDS Living

I believe certain particulars about rituals are important in helping us to both focus on the ritual, and cement certain ideas in our mind. I'm saying this from a completely secular, pragmatic point of view. I doubt God really cares about the particulars, only in the effect the ritual has on us (if ...

Re: Which Hand for Sacrament - LDS Living

My 8.5 year old is left handed, and also has a hard time with being corrected or transitions. For a while, we had an unfortunate family habit where my daughter would take the sacrament with her left hand, my husband would correct her, and then my daughter would become ashamed and defiant of her beha...

Re: Repentance, confessions, and letting go of the past

I don't believe it will ever be the same. Our mistakes make us who we are; and hopefully will make us into better people. We can change and improve. I think that's the heart of repentance. But to deny our past... to carry on pretending like it's never happened... to erase a part of our lives, becau...

Re: Dad at Achievement Days - Success

I also love that this is some real world application. When I first heard of activity days I thought in my head that it would be something like cub scouts. I think I equated it to adventure girls. I was somewhat disappointed to find that it was basically a better version of Sunday School where the t...

Dad at Achievement Days - Success

Last night my husband hosted a "Science Night" focusing on Newton's Laws of Physics for our Achievement Day girls [technically I set it up and sustained him through the planning and supplies]. It was a lot of work for him to plan and execute, but I think it was a good experience. We were nervous bec...

Re: Sacred Myth and Truth Claims

I think another contributing factor is the dissemination of logic and critical thinking skills. I don't think they were taught in the generation before mine, but going to elementary school in the '90's meant being exposed to critical thinking teachings as a teenager and beyond that.

Re: YW and free babysitting

Turns out this month is the "Marriage and Family" month in the YM manual, including the lesson "How can I prepare now to become a righteous husband and father?". Here is what I would teach if I was asked to teach the youth (which is why they haven't asked me to teach yet): 1. Counsel with your spou...
