Re: Dieter Update

Wasn't he one of the leaders behind the essays? If I'm remembering that right, it could be great that he's in charge of correlation.

Re: How to Resolve Feelings of Intellectual Dishonesty

I didn't find peace in the third option, and I'm not sure I could have. There were two problems with it. First, I have a daughter for whom I believe the LDS church is toxic. I couldn't attend without becoming upset, which made her retrench. I also couldn't attend without making it seem like she has ...

Re: The Lies We tell ourselves: I don't belong.

Beefster, you might find Brene Brown's latest book Braving the Wilderness helpful. It's about finding belonging when you don't or can't fit in, rather than finding belonging by fitting in.

Re: Buzzwords

More: tender mercies, sustain, eternal truths, celestial (when it means "identified by the Church as godly"). I wonder whether there are loads of them that I just can't hear. JWs use the word "stumble" as an act you do to someone else ("don't stumble the other brothers") and it's so, so weird, but t...

Re: First Time Temple Freakout - You Weren't Prepared

The endowment needs streamlining. They should let you take 10 names through per session. "Think of the first given names ," etc. Heck, just about everything could be parallelized like that! If Jesus could be punished by proxy for everyone at once, and we're supposed to be saviors on Mount Zion, why ...

Re: Buzzwords

"Testimony" drives me batty. To everyone else in the world, it's the words you say when you testify. To a Mormon, it's an abstract thing inside you that can be strong or weak, which you influence by doing stuff the Church tells you to do. Many members don't think about it deeply enough to properly i...

Re: The Upcoming YSA Face to Face

I think Elder Ballard thinks the Church is honest and transparent, and has never evaluated whether that's actually true. It would be enlightening for him to do so, but nobody is going to hold his feet to the fire until he does. Besides, to him, the Church is axiomatically good. To him, it's not poss...

Re: Lansing Michigan Apostle Visit

What if a Beehive got up and gave a Beehivic blessing mentioning parents, people that struggle spiritually, people seeking an education, and people that deal with mental illness? I know this is just a rhetorical device, but I really, really, really want to see this. I laughed so hard, especially at...

Re: Symbolism in the temple vs. baptism

While I do love the symbolism of being buried and resurrected to new life etc., I can also see how sprinkling baptism have related symbolism. So I'm having a hard time reconciling why it's OK to perform and "preach" that sort of symbolism in the temple (at least that temple ordinance) and not bapti...

Re: The Funnest Experience at another church -- new story!

I don't think it's the beat, it's the instruments. The list of approved instruments for SM appears to be very short. Pianos, organs, violins, flutes, cellos, harps. That's about it. Well, so much for my tuba-accordion-and-bagpipe rendition of Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. What, no harmonica or...
