Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

Ok, to get this back on track --- you have confirmed my conclusion that it's best to sidestep the gospel issues. I do agree that it means being charitable to my friend in his apparent arrogance as well. To some degree, the fact that the scriptures tend to elevate the "righteous" over the "wicked" o...

Re: It's Judgment Day, and You've Been Rebuked -- what will you say or do?

Wow Reuben -- I am glad you will go out with self-assertiveness. I wanted to say more, like you did, but felt the previous responses that showed humble acceptance of what the judge dispenses kind of shut me up. I think these are very good questions, although a bit disrespectful as worded. Perhaps t...

Re: It's Judgment Day, and You've Been Rebuked -- what will you say or do?

If my judgment is based on unbelief (in Mormonism, Scientology, Catholicism, or even just humanism): "How can you justify giving out an infinite punishment based on the minuscule amount of information a human being is capable of perceiving and making sense of?" If my judgment is based on unbelief in...

Re: Scientology - What makes a religion evil, dangerous, or a cult?

I don't think there is any clear dividing line or consistent definition of "cult" that everyone is going to agree with. I think the universal definition is "an ideological group I don't particularly like at this moment." Still, I imagine some concrete lines have to be drawn. I think "cult" has too ...

Re: Feeling Traumatized at Church?

Soon there is a knot in your stomach and your heart rate rises as you feel anxiety and just want to get out of there . Sometimes you can cope by tuning out and focusing on something else but sometimes you feel like the only emotionally healthy option is to get up and leave. [...] Why am I experienc...

Re: "It's Because You're Black" - June 2018 Ensign

I thought of an analogy while reading this thread. When an old building in a modern city becomes unfit or unsafe, we knock it down to build a new one in its place. It's relatively easy to haul away the debris containing the old materials and bring in new materials to start from scratch. A year later...

Re: Poll: Mormon identity and its effect on emotional health

I'm running this poll at NOM for comparison. (Feel free to vote both places if you have accounts.) I'm really curious about what I'll find. The poll is inspired by a few things: Starting to study secular Buddhism Wondering why disaffected members resign, and why they often report such a difference i...

Poll: Mormon identity and its effect on emotional health

I'm not asking about the actual effects of actually being an active Mormon or not. For example, satisfaction or stress from having a calling if you are an active Mormon isn't the kind of joy or sorrow I'm after. I'm not asking about the actual effects of thinking of yourself as a Mormon or not. For ...

Re: Nelson in Africa

So what happens if Church members faithfully pay tithing and then can't afford to pay for their mortgage/rent or even food for their families in the worst cases? They'll probably give them support through fast offerings, which will both increase their loyalty to the Church and feel indebted to it. ...
