Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

I do know what apparently doesn't work - GA or sacrament meeting talks and EQ/RS lessons. Somehow it must be that those who are guilty think it doesn't apply to them. I hear that. Unfortunately, I don't know if there is a more effective solution out there. If there is, I think it'll take a while to...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

It's a problem when it ends with "so I'm better than you." I gave it another read, and I liked it better the second time around. You're right. We've got a big problem with position pride/envy, whether it's hitting the milestones, having a certain income, or holding a particular calling. I remember ...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

To be completely honest, this article felt like the media sensationalizing (no offense to DJ). Most of the things mentioned, from having children, getting married, etc are either folks making small talk, or tounge-in-cheek teasing. I'm not saying it's tactful, but there's a difference betwen lack of...

Re: Scientology - What makes a religion evil, dangerous, or a cult?

"Dianetics" is an interesting book with a few good ideas. There are actually one or two good things in Scientology. However, in this case I don't know how the wheat can be separated from the chaff. How much poop do we allow in our brownies, before we have to start saying, "Those aren't brownies. Th...

Re: Pray to the Lord?

I think it's classical trinitarian lingo seeping into our doctrine. Jesus is God, God is Jesus. They are one in the same, except they're not, but they are. Homoiousian vs Homoousion. Praying to the Father is praying to the Lord.

Scientology - What makes a religion evil, dangerous, or a cult?

When you think of religions that have a bad rap, none is more prevalent than Scientology. There are a few marks against it, which have elevated it in the minds of many to the status of "cult". Here are just a few of the reasons: Charges its members exorbitant fees for membership, as well as for init...

Re: Well, there went that plan.

I had something similar happen, a few years back. I was personally asked and interviewed by a member of the SP, to serve in the EQP. My wife already knew the jist of how I felt, but I still felt so much pressure,I accepted it. That night I wrote an email, turning it down, giving only minimal details...

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

But what if "wanting to be accepted" is the better alternative to "burn this puppy to the ground." If I really thought about it, which I'm not inclined to do, I'd say that the main reason I'd want to speak up would be to cut through the boredom and predictability of our meetings. Boredom....

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

I think you're right, that most people go to Church not to improve, but to receive comfort and certainty. There's also another aspect to the Abrahamic God, that most Judeo-Christian-Muslims don't talk about. Jehovah is a God of War. The main themes behind the Abrahamic religions are not about peace,...

Re: How do you measure success in "ministering"

If you use "ministering" as a noun or an adjective, you've failed before you've begun.

I do like Nibs answer. To build on that, if you're worrying about "success" or "failure" in ministering, you're back to checking boxes and missed the point. Just... minister. Love your families.
