Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

Calling a "friend" to repent has the connotation of "I know what's right & you don't". Or "I'm in a position to judge right & wrong & you are definitely wrong & need to change." Personally, I think it can be useful and a sign of a solid friendship, if one feels comfortable enough to call the other ...

Re: The Lord's Name

Saying God's name (as held by the Abrahamic religions) out of context is pretty rare. I think "OMG" and the like came about from people wanting to shock, or be impolite. And I believe impoliteness to be a sin, so I try to avoid it. Same reason I don't swear. This became blatantly obvious to me when ...

Re: Spiritual Anchors

Thanks for sharing, Hawkgrrl! I was also taught and held those same beliefs in childhood. Those same messages continue to pop up in Church every once in a while, even now. The article reminded me of a book I read some time ago, called "Influence" (by Dr. Robert Caldini) . It was a great read. He cov...

Re: Jesus and God as the Missing Benevolence In the World

To build upon DJ's comment here, Christ in the 1st century, was an anti-type of of Caesar, one of whose titles (given by his Roman subjects) declared him to be the "Son of God". To start, I hope everyone knows what follows is my personal interpretation, based on the evidence I see. I don't mean to ...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

A friend of mine - a Catholic no less - thinks all this talk of our lord (and our lady in his tradition) derives directly from feudalism. Not to discount the whole of it, but back in the middle ages Christianity was heavily used to keep the serfs in check, and obedient to their masters. Their kings...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

You could say that in the temple ceremony god is the parent and everyone else is one of his children. The relationship is less leader:follower and more parent:child and maybe it's all the children than need tiered leadership. That's a good point. I believe a good parent is one who hopes their child...

I really don't think the afterlife is going to be much like this place in form or content.
But JS or the D&C said the same sociality that exists here on earth will exist in Heaven....
JS said a lot of things...

Re: Lost Time Listener First Time Caller

Thanks, dande48. Great insights. I'm curious, what has been your experience in the Church not holding a temple recommend? Have you still been asked to hold a calling and what things do you participate in? Your Bishop and Stake President are going to see it on the list, but what they choose to do wi...

Re: Lost Time Listener First Time Caller

Hey Felix! Happy to have you join in. Is it honest and authentic to have a temple recommend with a very loose acceptance of the core belief tenants? Personally, no. I choose not to because I would not feel honest or authentic in doing so. I feel happier and more free for choosing not to hold a templ...

Re: Better to be Happy in Ignorance or Miserable in the Truth?

In fact, you can take the church out of it entirely and use a terminal illness analogy for discussion -- better to not know about the existence of the illness and then drop dead happy (provided it is symptomless, like certain forms of cancer), or to know about the illness and its risks and be miser...
