Re: Creationism vs Evolutionism in Faith Transition... Or Why Do I Feel Like I Lost the Arguement?

Looking at Creationism and Evolution solely for what is useful, not as true: Evolution -Better healthcare (antibiotics, epidemic predictions, medication testing, etc) -Guided evolution (better crops, better livestock) -Able to cope with changes to the world and environment (by better understanding t...

Re: Scientology - What makes a religion evil, dangerous, or a cult?

At the extreme, a cult includes active, intentional, coercive brainwashing as a central component. How do we define "brainwashing"? To me, this fits in the same category as "cult", being a word with more stigma than concrete definition. Replace it with "indoctrination", "proselytization", or "persu...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

A former Staylds participant, Mercyngrace, had a perspective on the gospel that seemed to reconcile the 3 degrees of glory with the grace of God. Essentially, instead of looking at it as being graded for performance it can be viewed more like a guided tour. The terrestrial and telestial kingdoms wi...

Re: Feeling Traumatized at Church?

The trauma comes, because your perspective of the Church has shifted. You loved the Church, because of what it claimed to be, and the needs it helped fulfill. Now, you recognize that the Church is not entirely what it claimed to be, and it is no longer able to fulfill your needs as it once did. But ...

Re: Scientology - What makes a religion evil, dangerous, or a cult?

I don't think there is any clear dividing line or consistent definition of "cult" that everyone is going to agree with. I think the universal definition is "an ideological group I don't particularly like at this moment." Still, I imagine some concrete lines have to be drawn. As it currently stands ...

Re: Philosophy of Non-Responders 101

The difficulty with home teaching is, people know they're an assignment. It's as if you are only being their friend, because you were told to. It can make people feel uncomfortable, especially if they don't want to have anything to do with the Church. If they're unresponsive, I'd first check to make...

Re: As man is God once was

Yes, I have had a problem with this as well. I figure that IF God had a God and , and that God had a God and etc,,,,then WHERE exactly did it all start? And shouldn't that SOURCE of where all things came from, be that thing that we worship? It's turtles, all the way down. There's a few different wa...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

I think this is mostly a product of our society/culture as a whole. We get promoted at work, win awards, etc. It becomes all about these things and that slops over into the church, which is not really supposed to be set up that way. So true. It's tough to tell the difference, between what's Western...
