Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

I had one of those patriarchal blessings. There were a number of specifics, none of which came true (for example, I would be given the gift of tounges and learn several new languages while serving my mission). Also, parts about my struggles and challenges, things that I'm good at... From the start, ...

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

On the one hand, $120K a year is a LOT. When you're asking people to pay tithing, when their kids go hungry, or they can't afford to pay rent on their broken apartment... it just doesn't seem right. When my dad got called as a Stake President, one of the General Authorities who selected him was a cu...

Re: Convert trying to stay

Happy to have you, Squid. I was born in the covenant, so I'm not sure how much I can empathize. Maybe if I wasn't, I would've left. Who knows? For me, it's been very important to redefine what I believe and why I believe it. The Church places a huge emphasis on the priesthood authority, especially o...

Re: My Temple Wedding Adventure

I'm proud of you, SD. For me, the decision not to get my temple recommend at this time was one of the hardest decisions I've made. But even though I'm going to miss out on my sister's wedding, it's been liberating. I feel free to live according to the dictates of my own consience. There's nothing le...

I wondered if I'd been banned!
This was my first thought too... "Maybe I should've tuned down my more unorthodox ideas".

I remember a couple of weeks ago, when I tried to sign in, the system had me downloading your php files. I'm glad everything is back up and working. Thanks for your hard work!

Re: The Church's History of Tithing

@Always Thinking; To be honest, it's just an assumption. It would make very little sense for the Church to departmentalize its income into tithing and tithing-investment-returns. As with most businesses, the entirity of the income is brought in, and then divided according to their needs. What if a f...

Re: The Church's History of Tithing

@Always Thinking, that could be true; I never heard the GAs make that claim, but it all comes from the same accounts. Any returns on the Church's investments go to their general use fund, same as tithing, which gets alloted to their salaries, Church upkeep, humanitarian work, further investments, et...

Re: The Church's History of Tithing

That's some interesting research. On the one hand, since most of the Q15 solely get their income from other people's tithing (and they get to determine what that income is), it seems like a meaningless gesture. It's like when CEOs of non-profits (looking at United Way) take an enourmous salary paid ...

Re: What My Faith Journey Taught Me

Not to take away from your thoughts, I'm responding to this particular quote (emphasis added). I would hope that he would come and live in the house himself because after all that remodeling it's no longer my house, it's his house. What if I truly wanted a quaint cottage? I get the analogy, that go...

Re: Boy Scouts allow Girls now

I was going to say, "Boy Scouts is a non-profit organization. They're not concerned about profit!" Then I looked it up...

Their CEO, Roy Williams, brings in $1.6mil a year. That makes him the 5th highest paid non-profit CEO in the world. :P Wish I could could make me some non-profits.
