Re: The Value of Accumulating Luxuries

I've always thought it would be interesting to accumulate wealth in the first part of your life & spend the last half giving it away to worthy causes or trying to solve problems in the world. Similar to the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. I've always thought this sort of philanthropy to be a bit o...

Re: The Value of Accumulating Luxuries

If I understand you right: The value of accumulating luxuries, is in realizing that luxuries have no inherent value. That's an interesting insight. I'd like to extend it a little further: The value of making mistakes, is realizing they are mistakes. ... and therefore we shouldn't look down on oursel...

Re: Do you consider Church attendance mandatory for everyone?

"Mandatory" means required. Many members have jobs on Sunday, for example, and can't attend church services regularly - for short and long periods of time. Many people are home bound and can't attend church at all. The Church's position is, essentially, attend when you can - and "acceptable" defini...

:D Why didn't he just do it in one of the general sessions? I'd hedge my bets he was just writing his talk for the Women's session, the idea popped into his head, thought it'd be helpful, considered it revelation, and included it in his talk. I don't think he had anything but the best of intentions,...

Re: The Church to match box office sales ...

My only concern is whether the story portrayed in the movie is faithful to what actually happened... I've been reading up on Jane Manning James. She has a pretty fascinating story, and I think shines a positive light on the Smith family; she was a very close friend of the family, and even reportedl...

Re: Do you consider Church attendance mandatory for everyone?

According to the Church, I'd say Church attendance is required/mandatory for all who are able, to recieve exaltation. Heck, it's part of the temple recommend interview questions. For myself, I've grown to love an an old Hindu/Buddhist saying that used to bug me SO MUCH on my mission. "There are many...

Re: The Church to match box office sales ...

If forgiven by God (and I'm not sure God forgives organizations, I do believe God forgives individuals), there is no need for an apology. I've heard this repeatedly, but I'm not sure I like the sentiment. It's too often used as a doctrinal way to place the blame on the victim. "God has forgiven me,...

3rd of the 14 fundamentals: The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.

Maybe that's why we call such old men to be prophets. By the time they're wrong, we'll have a new one!

Re: The Church to match box office sales ...

In fact, a large part of the conflict in Missouri was over the Church integrating with free black people and being viewed as abolitionists. We say that. We put it into our movies. But I don't think that's really the case. Joseph Smith ran on a platform which included gradually abolishing slavery ov...

Re: The Church to match box office sales ...

It might be "repentance", but it's a different brand of repentance than they teach over the pulpit. It's like when a man becomes afraid his wife is going to find out about an affair from a few years prior. He brings her flowers, does the dishes, and steps up his "husband" game, so she won't believe ...
