Re: Gerontocracy versus Terms?
To (over) extend the cold war analogy, you are not generally going to get shot at if you stay on one side of the wall or the other. But when you are not fully in (TBM) and you try to stay a bit in the middle ground between the two walls, it can be an uncomfortable place to be. What causes the wall t...

Re: Getting ordained online
I think as long as you are not joining another religion then the church I don't think is involved. They do consider joining another church grounds for getting exed.

Re: Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Lifting Ban
On the other, given the recent "revelation" dialog, I fear that the message will be more along the lines of "Look how God is leading this Church with ongoing revelation!" I would even be OK with that if the message was, "We screwed this up so badly that God finally had to give us direct revelation ...

Re: Nelson in Africa
I am not going to disagree with your general sentiment, but I will push back a bit. With the closed books there's no way of knowing but I think that's a big if with the church. In wealthier nations the tithing dollars go up and a minuscule fraction of the money comes back to the community. I imagine...

Re: Hypothesis: Purely Intellectual Faith Crises aren't crises
I'd say nothing is purely intellectual at all. People arrive at conclusions largely from emotion, and then come up with "logical" reasons as to why those conclusions are right. If someone arrives at a wrong conclusion, especially a religious one, it's almost never due to an error in reason. I wish ...

Re: Nelson in Africa
Nelson is preaching the prosperity gospel - almost the definition of it. Just like the televangelists, "Send me your money and God will bless you."

Re: Hypothesis: Purely Intellectual Faith Crises aren't crises
If you read James Fowler's "Stages of Faith" he would call a faith crisis the progression into another stage. He is careful not to put one over the other as he doesn't seem to see a person in Stage 5 as morally better than a person in Stage 3. But most of us can attest, in the middle of a "faith cri...
