Re: Church Financial Management Principles Applied in Reverse

Reasonable or not, it does show an interesting power dynamic between the church and members.

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

I was just about to comment wondering "when is enough enough?" I worry that the temptation to gather ever more money and the "prestige" this brings the the church that nobody will be willing to stop. What if we start approaching the wealth of the Catholic church. Do we back off as "we have enough", ...

Re: An alternate model for funding the church

I partially agree. I don't want to be a free-loader. I am one of those guys that when I visit even a historic Catholic church that is open just for people to come and look at the stained glass, I put a few bucks in the jar. I guess the pragmatic side of me thing, "This building isn't going to keep i...

Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

It does tell me to pay tithing and pray regularly Have you paid tithing? Then you have checked that one off. You just need to pray regularly now. If apologists and the essays can play with words, you can too! My dad had a very specific item in his and he was TBM to the end and it didn't come true.

Re: My Nephew Met a GA

Elder Scott came to the MTC to give a talk. When he visited our mission in South America, he gave the same talk. Much later this talk was published in the Ensign. From my notes on the first two renditions of the talk and comparison with the published version I can see differences. What I think I le...

Re: Tell me why I don't like Sundays

Today seems to be my "yeah - what Nibbler said" day. My "challenge" is not just "convincing myself why I need to be in there listening", but I am cursed with our chapel has a very small internet connection (read useless once >1 ward is in the building) and it is a cell dead spot. Most of the time I ...

Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

Ditto. Mine is so vague there is nothing that I can say "yep, that happened" (other than you are going to get married and have kids). It did say technology would be changing. Bill Reel had an interesting podcast on this and his unique situation. His girlfriend was a member and converted him. So they...

Re: Busy in the Beehive

In my experience, the friendships there are deeply conditional on you towing the line. If you fall off the wagon, those relationships are not as deep. If you move, you lose most of them. Yeah, I've seen this as well. And here is where the busy in the beehive comes into play. Callings eat up free ti...

Re: The Church's History of Tithing

In terms of getting married outside the temple, I think it represents a wonderful opportunity to show inclusion of many, many people. When I attended my sisters wedding it was VERY spiritual. It was held in a log cabin at a campground. She is a non-member. I think someone was talking about all the ...

Re: My Temple Wedding Adventure

You start to realize that church policy only has claim on you if you let it. I fully agree with that and I have reached that place. The only thing still there is knowing that me being more honest about where I am is going to cause pain with family members. If one of my kids brings home a fiance or ...
