Re: How do you measure success in "ministering"

I'm not sure how to feel. During this most recent general conference and during his trip to Kenya, Nelson placed a lot of focus on people seeking and receiving their own revelation. Here we have this new program, a chance for a fresh start, but no one wants to take any chances and do something diffe...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

I think it would require a seismic shift. We'd have to axe this notion of "worthiness" that we've placed front and center in our culture. I don't go one Sunday without hearing about worthiness, not one. Worthy to receive revelation. Worthy to receive blessings. Worthy to go to the temple. We are sea...

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

Yeah, I can see how that might ruffle some feathers. The subject matter alone (second anointing) really makes people feel uncomfortable and probably steers most people's thoughts towards thinking their beliefs are under attack. The moment I realized that my perspectives weren't welcome and t...

Re: Is it worth it raising daughters in the church?

I really do feel that this church is wonderful for youth. I think it does a far better job at meeting the needs of youth than it does for people who are my age (I am nearly 40). I try to remind myself that the church meeting the needs of my children is indirectly meeting one of my needs... but yeah...

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

If you want to express your differing beliefs, you need to be tactful, and have much better reasons than "wanting to be accepted". But what if "wanting to be accepted" is the better alternative to "burn this puppy to the ground." If I really thought about it, which I'm not inclined to do,...

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

Curt Sunshine often remarks he participates in group activities with the sole focus of serving others/making the experience better for others - and that he has more meaningful experiences because of this focus. It's also sobering when you begin to realize that the best way to serve others may be to...

The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

In another thread Roy said (emphasis added): I agree with the pick your battles advice. I try to limit my comments in the class setting to advocating for more charity and less judgment for all. I do get the feeling that my comments are not always appreciated. Similar to relationships, you can only h...

Fortune cookie answer:

You will know it is a success when you no longer feel the need to measure its success.

Sorry, best I could do.

Re: Revelation

There is no scriptural basis for the pseudo doctrine that companionship of the Holy Ghost or revelation (or whatever other related thing) is based on worthiness. I'd argue that there's a scriptural basis in the opposite direction. How worthy was Paul on the road to Damascus? How worthy was Alma the...
