Re: An alternate model for funding the church

Tithing used to be 10% of surplus annually, meaning after all your expenses were taken care of, 10% of what you had left over. At some point they transitioned to 10% of income, but that was never a revelation, just a policy change. The wording in the D&C is still the same and could be interpreted a...

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

I hate to be that guy ...again... but one reading of that article is: 1) The church was struggling financially. 2) They made tithing a temple requirement. An admittedly uncharitable way of looking at this is, if you want to be saved and if you want to be able to perform the ordinances that will save...

Re: God has Favorites?

To understand better, you mean they are teaching that the favorites are the people who obey god, not that favorites are a specific group of people - like Israelites or Mormons. We've probably got it all memorized by now, but here it is: Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taug...

Re: StayLDS reference center

So did Brigham Young receive revelation to take the priesthood from people of African descent? Maybe someone else could give a more definitive answer but I think we could only speculate on that point. He may have presented it as a revelation or he may have taken it as a given or a logical conclusio...

Re: An alternate model for funding the church

Go public. Allow members to buy stock in the church. I wonder what the IPO would be? ;) Or have investment packages members can buy into. My contributions bought this investment portfolio, it earned X amount of money in dividends last year, I made Y amount of money last year; my tithing wo...

Re: My Nephew Met a GA

I think most missionaries get a visit from an apostle at least once on their mission. I could be wrong. It's a big world. I remember three visits from GAs while I was on my mission. MTC: I was there when they did a worldwide broadcast to all missionaries from the MTC. Two apostles headlined. I sang ...

Re: Tell me why I don't like Sundays

My "challenge" is not just "convincing myself why I need to be in there listening", but I am cursed with our chapel has a very small internet connection (read useless once >1 ward is in the building) and it is a cell dead spot. Most of the time I can't get cellular data at all. Bison Burrito works ...

Re: Tell me why I don't like Sundays

How do you blow off comments, judgments, and false/embellished/mystical accounts? Recognizing that the people that are making those comments are expected to make those sorts of comments with where they are at in their own personal journey. I would expect an orthodox member to make orthodox comments...

Re: Busy in the Beehive

In my experience, the friendships there are deeply conditional on you towing the line. If you fall off the wagon, those relationships are not as deep. If you move, you lose most of them. Yeah, I've seen this as well. And here is where the busy in the beehive comes into play. Callings eat up free ti...
