Re: A little surprised -- should I be?

I've heard many testimonies from people that confessed something in their youth, ran into their bishop decades later, and were relieved when they found that the BP didn't remember their sins. To them it was a testimony that if the BP could forget their sins then god could... and they could also.

Re: No standing still?

It's pretty common to hear people in the church say that if you aren't progressing in the gospel, you are regressing. There is no standing still. I've hear that said about the business world all the time. From the movie Tommy Boy: "Ron, don't tell me the bank thinks we need to wait it out. Any busi...

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

I am a VERY frugal person. I am a bit of a hoarder financially. I do not know specifically what I am saving for. Retirement? Children's educations? Rainy day fund? Life is a funny thing. Do we tighten our belts and save our resources for tomorrow's need that may never come? Or do we make the best u...

Re: What are the laws, rites and ordinances that pertain to eternal marriage?

One take, they're ten cent words to give things an air of mysticism and to make it sound more important.

There's another approach. The loose definitions allow you to come up with your own meanings, which I see as a positive thing.

Re: An alternate model for funding the church

Tithing used to be 10% of surplus annually, meaning after all your expenses were taken care of, 10% of what you had left over. At some point they transitioned to 10% of income, but that was never a revelation, just a policy change. The wording in the D&C is still the same and could be interpreted a...

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

I hate to be that guy ...again... but one reading of that article is: 1) The church was struggling financially. 2) They made tithing a temple requirement. An admittedly uncharitable way of looking at this is, if you want to be saved and if you want to be able to perform the ordinances that will save...

Re: God has Favorites?

To understand better, you mean they are teaching that the favorites are the people who obey god, not that favorites are a specific group of people - like Israelites or Mormons. We've probably got it all memorized by now, but here it is: Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taug...

Re: Was the priesthood ban revelation?

So did Brigham Young receive revelation to take the priesthood from people of African descent? Maybe someone else could give a more definitive answer but I think we could only speculate on that point. He may have presented it as a revelation or he may have taken it as a given or a logical conclusio...
