Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

Caffeinated soda and tithing on gross: Maybe there's the hard and soft view of SD's list of hard commitments. I think most members would feel accepted even when they don't abstain from caffeinated soda. After all, it's not a part of the enforced WoW, sodas are a hedge for the members that take thing...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

Take a bunch of exMission Presidents and Bishops and SP's and reliable people, you need a different leadership model than if you have people you literally have to DRAG to cross the finish line. IMO that's only the case if you assume that the church was the one and only true church and that leaders ...

Re: Disingenuous, Apathetic, and Aloof

1) Church is mediocre. We have sensational claims, but our lives do not necessarily reflect a grand theophany like the life of Joseph Smith i.e. first vision. I wonder how much grand theophany went on back in the day and how many mediocre stories in the early church got turned into legend for us to...

Re: The Lord's Name

There's also the theory that taking the name of the lord in vain has more to do with professing to speak for and in behalf of god when you (knowingly) are not.

Re: Jesus and God as the Missing Benevolence In the World

Jesus is fighting against a very powerful aspect of human nature/evolution. One interpretation of Jesus' ministry is that he came to help people gain direct access to god. You no longer need the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Sanhedrin, the temple, etc. to access god; you can access god directly. The...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

I really don't think the afterlife is going to be much like this place in form or content. But JS or the D&C said the same sociality that exists here on earth will exist in Heaven.... If that's the case then: Leader says something. I roll my eyes and go back to doing whatever it is I'm doing. ;) He...

Re: Better to be Happy in Ignorance or Miserable in the Truth?

The Church has taken many active steps to conceal/deny history. For example, many of the Church archives are inaccessible to third-party historians. The Church's financial records are also closed to the public. And the Church has actively chosen stories which support their narrative, even if they a...

Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

He commented that from the perspective of the gospel, that none of those achievements mattered in the eternities. This life. Not a part of eternity. News to me. Prepping for conversations with the ultra orthodox? I usually take the same approach where you listen to a friend that's super passionate ...

So instead of the standard family history sedan, I ended up with an expanded human family school bus.

Re: Wayward children of faithful LDS parents

I came to a greater peace with family history when I realized that the flavor practiced by the LDS faith was part of the rituals designed to connect us both to our ancestors and to future generations. That is what we are trying to do - involve ourselves in efforts to connect ourselves to other gene...
