Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

It's worth pointing out that StayLDS self-selects for people who work quietly behind the scenes. It's part of its character. People like Sam Young would get bored and frustrated here. And so you get narratives that talk about "the" way to get the church to change, all involving small local effects....

Re: Why Do You Stay?

I'm going to post links to several threads. Not in an effort to redirect the conversation to any of the linked threads or to suggest that a new thread shouldn't be created. It's a good subject to have a thread on from time to time because I find the answer changes so much over time. Why do you stay?...

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

So how can we make our voices heard by general authorities without running the risk of excommunication? I apologize in advance for the pessimism. Voices heard by general authorities ... I think that expectation is at the heart of the issue. If the goal is to be heard by top leadership we may only b...

Re: Very good post about "what I wish Mormons knew about those that leave"

Thanks for the clarification. Don't let the relative brevity of the thanks be an indication of the sincerity or depth of the thanks. I seriously do appreciate the clarification. I really struggle to express myself on this topic. But if I had to try. The article is a public shaming of public shaming....

Re: Very good post about "what I wish Mormons knew about those that leave"

On Own Now, I'm not sure how to phrase this, please have patience with me. Where's the equilibrium? Often when I see people hurting and desperately trying to be understood I see them get reprimanded for being too negative. Are we not then being negative towards the people we view as being negative? ...

Re: Very good post about "what I wish Mormons knew about those that leave"

In fairness, I don't think it's the whole of the Church. I wouldn't say it's most members. I can say the same. In my experience I'd say it's even limited to the same small group of people. Some of the higher profile callings will eventually be staffed by people in that small group and when that hap...

Re: Very good post about "what I wish Mormons knew about those that leave"

Thanks for sharing. I have to admit, my first reaction while reading was, "man, our culture sucks." But I didn't find anything in the article that was surprising. I realize that it takes lots of words and stories to help people understand another person's point of view but if I had to take one thing...

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

How much help do we need as a culture to view not obeying local and general leaders as being disobedient and rebellious? Does it take full on sedition to make people think that way or is it the default position when someone disobeys? I get it. In your analogy I'd take the position of, "Well, I guess...

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

I think the time frame in which we would like to experience change factors into our approach. Some may wish to see change in the short term, something that happens now or soon. Others may be satisfied knowing that things will eventually change, even it it takes 100 years. It's hard to fault people t...

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

Does the civil rights movement succeed with just MLK Jr. or just Malcolm X or do both play their roles? People leaving play their role, people staying play theirs. IMO both camps are utterly voiceless in the church. Leave, your voice mostly doesn't matter; stay, your voice mostly doesn't matter, the...
