Re: Are we the church of the WoW?

Are we the church of the WoW? It certainly forms a part of the cultural identity. The WoW doesn't come up very often in SM talks or F&T testimonies where I'm at. That said, earlier this year there were several mentions during PH of coffee specifically. Stories of investigators that just couldn't ki...

Re: End of Duty to God, Personal Progress, Faith In God

FYI, the new program has a name! "Children and Youth" https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900080061/church-replacement-for-boy-scouts-personal-progress-lds-mormon.html What I want to know is who exactly is the new program aimed at? One known goal of the initiative is to equalize experiences...

Re: Worthiness ?

There's a scripture in the Book of Mormon: ....we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do. Which often gets mistranslated into: ....we won't be saved by grace unless we are doing all we can do. The funny thing about "all we can do" is that in our minds "all we can do" is neve...

Re: End of Duty to God, Personal Progress, Faith In God

What I am actually most scared about is safety. That's definitely a concern. Boy Scouts requires leaders to attend training sessions. The effectiveness of those training sessions could be up for debate, but at least they take place. I have no way of knowing but I'd suspect that the replacement prog...

Re: End of Duty to God, Personal Progress, Faith In God

The rumor mill is that changes will be discussed during October general conference. Barring that I'm sure there will be instruction ahead of the changes. Here are a few links with the limited information that is known: https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2019/04/29/latter-day-saints-are/ https://www.slt...

Re: Time to Pivot

Like I've said before, when it comes to the programs, goals, callings, commandments, testimonies & lessons taught, I keep what I can use & leave the rest. In the process, I refuse to feel guilty, ashamed or angry. Agreed. It's a good approach. Personally I've found the "what I can use" pool to be e...

Re: Time to Pivot

The missionary arm of the church does appear to be much more focused on selling a need as opposed to filling an existing need. The church in general works that way. Church meetings are often focused on selling me on what my needs should be; you need to be taking names to the temple, you need to be d...

Re: Church considering lowering age for youth interviews to 8

If they were to implement some policy to interview youth ages 8 to 11 at regular intervals I'd like to think that the interviews wouldn't be very formal and wouldn't be in a similar format to a TR interview. It would probably be something like: How are you doing? Are you happy? Do you have any ques...

Re: Church considering lowering age for youth interviews to 8

I think it's saying that if a youth ever has a problem they will feel comfortable with taking it to an ecclesiastical leader. It makes more sense in the context of a parent/child relationship than it does in a neighbor with a temporary mantle/child relationship.

Re: Church considering lowering age for youth interviews to 8

And a stray thought on interviews in general. One thought I keep having is why don't we move to a system where members only go to a bishop if they feel the need to go to a bishop. Why all these scheduled interviews? MLS (Member and Leader Services - a membership and statistics program) keeps track o...
