Re: Jana Riess on shame and fear

Maybe related, maybe not, there's the Joseph Campbell quote: Preachers err by trying to talk people into belief; better they reveal the radiance of their own discovery. This is another dead horse of mine. We spend a tremendous amount of effort shoring up belief in the restored, one true church narra...

Re: Jana Riess on shame and fear

Interesting points. I know I beat these dead horses too much, I apologize in advance for taking a few more wacks. The problem is OK, they listened, now what? Yeah, I struggled to answer my own question. The challenge is that there are as many reasons for leaving as there are people. If someone left ...

Re: Jana Riess on shame and fear

I forgot the most important bit.

What sort of things would motivate people to come back?

Re: Jana Riess on shame and fear

Our toolbox is pretty limited. Also, when you're a hammer everything looks like a nail. I think we as a church become hammers when our focus is on our authority. It's in human nature to want to fix, at least it's in my nature. That's a part of the issue, people that have left the church are seen as ...

Re: Is Sacrament Meeting being held anywhere but Utah?

Just a random thought/suggestion.

Someone is going to have to clean up the used cups. Likely the same people that will be blessing the sacrament for the next group. Maybe it would be better if everyone kept their own used cups and disposed of them in a big, open trashcan at the end of the service?

Re: Does the formula for developing spirituality work for you?

I haven't really answered any of your questions. I'll try. Defining spirituality as connecting with others. Reading: I do think reading helps, even though reading is an activity I do alone I still think it helps me connect with others. Here I mean reading anything and everything. Scriptures, news, s...

Re: Does the formula for developing spirituality work for you?

I hate to go this route (again) but post FC I get tripped up on the following: What does more spiritual mean? Testimony of what? What does strengthen a testimony mean? In my more orthodox days I would have answered that the testimony was about the church being the one True church with exclusive auth...

Re: How will the Church change in light of the Covid Virus?

I'm genuinely surprised we still don't have a weekly church-wide message from a GA. Nothing major, maybe one talk from a lower GA and one talk from a Q15. It would be over three months before a Q15 member would have to give another talk. The church certainly has the ability to pull off something lik...

That's good.

Anything small thing that could help is worth a try.

Re: Wouldn't it be easier just to tell us?

Maybe growth is found in the struggle.

And I do like the idea that there isn't one true path because it creates space for each of us to blaze our own trail.
