Re: Church Disavows Dark Sin as a Curse

... However, 2 Nephi 5:21 comes right out and says that the Lamanites were cursed with black skin to make them undesirable to the Nephites. It's a little harder for church leaders to distance themselves from that, since it comes right out of the BOM. ... I think the current approach leaders are tak...

Re: The Constitution will hang by a thread

Does anyone know the quote and source I've often heard that in the last days the Constitution of the US will hang by a thread and apostles will need to lead the saints in times of chaos? I think this prophecy became known as the "white Horse Prophecy" if I'm googling stuff right. It's a can of worm...

Re: What does a Temple Recommend mean to you?

I haven't heard of a meeting like this in a long, long time but I have memories from back in the day where stake presidents would hold a special meeting in the assembly halls for the temples that are large enough to have them. People from a stake would travel to the temple together and the SP would ...

Re: What does a Temple Recommend mean to you?

I do think the temple recommend is used to exclude people but a distinction I make is that I don't believe the purpose of a temple recommend was to exclude people; excluding people was just a byproduct that we've accepted into the culture. There's dualism associated with the temple recommend. Just l...

Re: Talk help/suggestions

Or Alma the Younger for the BoM crowd. I had that one listed too but deleted it before submitting. That story has lots of baggage that I feel can feed into the prosperity gospel. Now that this is a separate post I can talk about my reasons. Alma Jr. was actively trying to destroy the church and lea...

Re: Talk help/suggestions

(Side note, you all can't begin to imagine what it's like right now here on the eve of the 200th anniversary of the FV. I try to ignore as much possible and have been skipping second hour. It might become intolerable by GC time.) I'm hearing some of that but it hasn't worked up to a fever pitch yet...

Re: Having a Different Conversation/I Don't Know What To Say

I've been there. My heart breaks for you and the situation you're in. Random thoughts: Primary President: Her behavior sounds typical. One of the benefits to being in a group with assumed shared beliefs is that the assumed shared beliefs serve as conversational ice breakers. One of the downsides of ...

Re: Gospel Art Kudos

Disclaimer: I realize there's some myth to this, but there's some truth too. The irony here is that Nephi, Sam, and Lehi, being Israelites, likely all had full beards. Meanwhile Laman and Lemuel, fathers of the Lamanite people, the ones whose bloodline survived, being "among the ancestors of the Ame...

Re: An Unemotional Analysis of the Recent "Whistleblower" on LDS Church Finances

I don't know what's so bad about emotions, they serve a purpose. It's helpful to understand the root of what produces our emotions and put them into perspective. After all, emotions can interfere with analysis in both directions. People can rush to the defense of the church before they've processed ...

Re: An Unemotional Analysis of the Recent "Whistleblower" on LDS Church Finances

...especially comments like "if you don't have money for food, pay your tithing." That feels to me like forcing lower-income people to be dependent upon the church. If you pay tithing THEN we will give you food from the bishop's storehouse. Piggybacking on this. I don't think having a rainy day fun...
