Re: Scouting in Bankruptcy

I'm torn. I'd hate to see the institution disappear but I also hate it for the victims. I'm not very familiar with the case. Did the BSA actively protect/shield/hide abusers or is it just an organization that has deep pockets? If scoutmaster Bob abused kids, go after scoutmaster Bob. If scoutmaster ...

Re: Handbook Highlights from John Dehlin

I think the largest change is that the handbook is now accessible to the public. If nothing more, having a public handbook means policies are more open to scrutiny, which I think will have a softening effect on policies over time. In other words, what might a policy look like if it was penned knowin...

Re: My farewell to StayLDS

You helped create a home for the spiritually homeless. Thank you for that.

Thank you for all you've done over the years.

Re: The Name of the Church

The GA's whole point was that it wasn't a boatload of money, it was a few hundred dollars. And it was presented as a faith promoting story, although I saw it as more corporate as you did, especially since he threw in the part about the European shell corporation that actually made the purchase on b...

Re: The Name of the Church

1. Sort of related, and this is breaking news. Starting now wifi access at church is changing. The network will be known as liahona and the password is alma3738. Users won't need to reenter their password each time they access it, but will need to do the user agreement each day. LDSaccess will rema...

Re: The Name of the Church

"LDS" is pretty short but we got rid of that one too. I'm reminded of that episode of Big Bang Theory where Howard's efforts to set his own nickname, Rocket Man, backfire and his peers end up calling him Fruit Loops. Did the Anglicans decide to call themselves the Anglicans, or would they pre...

Re: Stake Conference

I don't see the new programs as much of a departure from anything we've done in the past. Members have long been counseled to study lessons at home and come to class prepared. No one does it, but that's been the consistent instruction. Here are a few things I think serve as barriers to people thinki...

Re: Stake Conference

We do lots of things for the sake of tradition. Only those at the very top have the authority to change things - but those are also the ones that are often advanced in age and significantly invested in the status quo. Other than inactives, they're also the furthest removed from the average member e...

Re: Struggling with Understanding the Truth of the Spirit

Do, does the Spirit really testify the church is true, or simply that the church is good? The standard teaching is that the spirit can be felt anywhere there is something good, when injecting that back in the context of movies you end up with the spirit witnessing when good principles are presented...

Re: Stake Conference

More to the matter at hand. I realized that people were just giving travel log talks with little to no mention of the gospel at all. I find this is often the case when we have visiting authorities. They'll often talk about the last overseas assignment they received and how much the church is growing...
