Re: Southern Baptist Convention Shift

To enact this change, young Baptists nominated 45-year-old pastor J.D. Greear from North Carolina to be president of the denomination. 2060. That's the year when a man in the LDS church that has the perspective of someone that is currently 45 years old might have a chance to become president of the...

Re: What does it mean to council?

I am still confused about what it means to council. I will throw out some possibilities and I would like some feedback. 1) A planning meeting to make plans/future decisions for the non-council Sundays. This could be where teaching assignments are discussed... also the content of what should be taug...

Re: Does Programmed Service Build Community?

There's the idea that we serve the people we love. I believe that we also grow to love the people we serve. I agree in that I feel that service that is performed because someone feels compelled to do something isn't as effective in building communities as volunteered service. There's the question of...

Re: How do I

One strategy is to pretend that you are an Anthropologist studying the ritualistic patterns of a strange sub-culture. That one never worked for me. I was already far too familiar with the tribe, in fact that was perhaps the hardest thing to deal with, I had reached a place where the tribe was too p...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

Most of my suggestions are for things I'd like removed. I always cringe when I hear the announcement that the hymn we'll be singing falls somewhere in the 19-27 range. I'm also no fan of the combat themed hymns - Onward, Christian Soldiers, We Are All Enlisted, Behold, A Royal Army, etc. -...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

This has made me reflect on some of the old hymns we used to sing, but now rarely or never. Perhaps you still do in your area, but I don't hear them anymore. For the older crowd: - We are all enlisted (250) ... - In our lovely Deseret (307) ... - I still occasionally hear Put Your Shoulder to the W...

Re: The New Inactives - Seniors

Church can make for a grueling experience. Of all people I'd imagine that seniors are burnt out. It's one thing to wear yourself out in the service of others but church demands often feel like work we do because we're following the formula or something we do out of tradition; this is the church prog...

And just think, that's 48 more hours per year you can work on family history, ministering and/or reading the Book of Mormon. ;)
I don't know about you but for me that would translate into 48 more hours per year complaining that church should be 1 hour. ;)

Re: Two Hour Church -- Rumor or Work in Process?

That would be really cool! That way I'd only have to skip one hour of church each week instead of two! :D Ha! Yeah, why wait for an official announcement? It feels like a repeat of a rumor that resurfaces every few years, this time with a little more credence because of the other changes made durin...
