Re: Creationism vs Evolutionism in Faith Transition... Or Why Do I Feel Like I Lost the Arguement?

I'm also in the creationism through evolution camp. Part of the resolution of my faith crisis (a very important part) was the recognition that all of this didn't just come into being. I don't know how God did it and I don't need to know - I do believe God did it though.

Re: Chosen People

Other than not really believing there are chosen people, the problem I have with us being said chosen people is that it so often leads to pridefulness among some of us. While not always explicitly stated (but it is sometimes explicitly stated) I often hear that we are better than our Christian broth...

Re: It's official, so long Scouts

So here's something I have been pondering for a bit, and I don't know the answer. I'm sure there will at some point in the next year and a half be some actual direction from the church. Now that there are no Scouts, will there be "boys camp?" There has always been girls camp, and this year girls cam...

Re: Feeling Traumatized at Church?

Traumatized may not actually be what everyone feels but I don't think the word is inappropriate in this context. At least some truly are traumatized. I work in an agency where every one of our clients has been traumatized in some way and some of them have been severely traumatized (especially by abu...

Re: How do you measure success in "ministering"

We have very good, progressive ward leadership and an orthodox but caring Stake President. Inlike the direction it is taking in our area. One thing that stood out in our training over the weekend was that we are moving away from a scripted, checklist approach. Another thing I mentioned is that the ...

Re: Feeling Traumatized at Church?

I think you're right that most of us have experienced or do experience this, and it can be a talk, testimony, lesson or song. I usually do as you said and distract myself with my tablet and/or phone. This past Sunday we sang "Praise to the Man" as a rest hymn. I know it doesn't bother some people he...

Re: Philosophy of Non-Responders 101

From one point of view there's still the "assigned friend" mentality. That was one of my issues with HT, we shouldn't have to be assigned to be friends and frankly some people one is assigned to probably can't ever really be friends because they have so little in common and little desire to be frien...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

I agree with you both, Dande and Nibbler. Unfortunately, people are largely self-focused. They have a need to feel proud and commended for what they've accomplished, even if it's a result of so many things outside their control. And people are so much in the habit of comparing themselves to others, ...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

How do you think we could solve this pride/envy issue? Great question. I wish I knew the answer. There have actually been a couple recent general conference talks on the issue but those don't seem to be the ones we talk about in EQ. I will give yesterday's HC speaker a kudo for mentioning the idea ...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

How about the "weird but useful guy at the back" badge. I hold a respectable calling, but certain members still give me a wide berth. I don't know that I'm all that weird, but others would probably disagree. I do likewise hold a respectable calling and there are some who likewise give me wide berth.
