Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

I know people who put a great deal of stock in their PB. I don't. To me it's very much like a visit to a psychic. They probably get all the generic stuff pretty much right if only because it can be self fulfilling (eg it says you're supposed to go on a mission so you do). Like yours Beefster there a...

Re: Convert trying to stay

Welcome. I saw a Facebook post yesterday on "Why members leave and never return." It was an awesome message, so I ended up using it for my home teaching message. It was really good. I hope we can be more welcoming to all. https://mormondom.com/why-people-leave-the-church-and-never-come-back-410e3e8...

Re: Convert trying to stay

Welcome. I am also a convert of many years ago, and I am the only member in my extended family. My view is very much like Dande's. When I returned from inactivity and "rebuilt" my faith it became crucial for me to recognize what I believed and what I didn't believe. We all have to make those choices...

Re: Siding with the "bad guys" / Modern English BoM

I don't think there is anything magical to reading the BoM... I don't know about that... whenever I read it, it appears to have the power to put me to sleep. And yes, that was one of the first things that leapt out at me when I read the BoM where I didn't let the book tell me who the good and bad g...

I'm sure there are many wards like this and there are some bishops like this. Then there are the bishops that aren't.

Re: Kirby nails it twice in one article

Nice link, DJ. Thanks. I like your highlights, as well as this one: Religion — choose one — is used far too often as a weapon to batter us into submission rather than to lift us out of bondage. Agree, Agree, Agree!!! It should make my life better! Not worse. And when it started making my life worse...

Re: Tell me why I don't like Sundays

I totally get it Amy. That's one of my criticisms of the rotating block schedule or even having church at an hour other than around 9 or 10. We no longer have small children and we didn't meet in a multi-ward building when we did but at that time there was a push to move SM from 9 to 10 to make it e...

Re: I thought I would teach Gospel Doctrine, when suddenly...

FWIW, in the Virtue lesson, I completely nixed the first story of the couple who "imploded" their lives by having pre-marital sex. That's a damaging idea to promulgate, in my mind, so I just skipped it. I've taught every lesson as authentically as I can, and class members have come to me after clas...

Kirby nails it twice in one article

http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/kirby/2017/10/08/now-this-is-a-sermon-i-can-get-behind-mormon-apostle-strikes-the-perfect-chord-on-perfection/ This is a two-in-one (maybe even three) column, one of Kirby's finest. After talking about his shenanigans as a boy, he gives us this gem: One might argue tha...

Gospel Library First Vision Accounts - NOT!

I mentioned in another thread that rather than derail that one I'd post about this. As usual I don't know which section fits it best but this seems like a good place. Fair warning that this post is partly rant and partly venting. My son pointed this out to me in asking a question. The First Vision a...
