Re: The New Inactives - Seniors

I guess to clarify. In my ward there are two (maybe three) kinds of seniors. There are the ones who travel, etc., and there are ones who just stop coming for the most part and become Christmas and Mother's Day members. I've known a couple of them - formerly very active - who just announce they are r...

Re: The New Inactives - Seniors

It happens here and I get it. I have watched (and been a part of) our aging ward. I live in an area where people leave. Rarely does a child hang around. They go off to college (BYU or not), find a job elsewhere and get married and live there. That leaves us parents traveling to see them and our gran...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

So after some research I have concluded that IMO the hymns are divided in thirds between keepers, meh, and dumpers. This is thirds in the "third of the hosts of heaven" kind of way - not necessarily equal thirds but somewhat close. The lists are therefore too long to put here where most of you would...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

I am excited about the changes, mostly for the reasons Curt gave. But also because I think for the last few years we've been hearing "No, we're not redoing the hymn book so quit asking." I also like that the "canon" will open a bit with online options. I think most regulars here know how much I disl...

Re: How do I

Callings were always inspired. I smiled and nodded as if I had the answer to my question. It appears that we were not ready to have leadership fallibility extend to callings. There are few things regarding faith, religion and/or the church that I "know." After serving in a couple bishoprics and on ...

Re: How do I

I like what OON said. I'm not sure I consider myself a guest at the LDS church, but I do sometimes go into observer mode. Fast forward to today. I sit in a congregation where most everyone has different beliefs from mine. They don't always agree with each other, but they do have a general belief sys...

Re: Does Programmed Service Build Community?

I think it can. Using your example, our local Methodist congregation does something very similar. When someone is sick, has a death in the family, etc., they are very very good at bringing around meals to those "in need." They're far more efficient than we are about it actually, even using a Google c...

Re: Same-Sex Families Being Added to the LDS Church's Family Search Database

Having come from a family where there were lots of divorces, second marriages, and children from both (or more) marriages I have always found it difficult to enter information like that into Family Search. They don't really make it easy. It is in fact easier to enter a child out of wedlock (like me)...

Re: "Choosing to Believe" & "Meaningful Choice"

I used to be bothered by the "choose to believe" idea until I recognized that for some things I am choosing to believe. I do not believe all (or even most) things Mormon. I believe in God because I believe that there must have been some "driving force" behind the universe, or in other words, I don't...

Re: Two Hour Church -- Rumor or Work in Process?

I think our F&T meetings are more like yours, Sam. We can count on the same people saying pretty much the same thing every month, with a few odd ones that sometimes get up. There's even kind of an order (old lady who reads her very orthodox testimony, old lady who babbles on for about 10 minutes abo...
