Re: What I thought was inspiration probably isn't...

I have had a few experiences where I am confident calling them inspiration - one just this month. Of course, there is the possibility of confirmation bias, but the timing of the unnatural thought, our subsequent actions, and then a discussion with my son that completely was unexpected (literally no...

Re: Abusing the Priesthood

I think often when the idea of someone abusing the priesthood is brought up it's really an individual (or sometimes a group of individuals) who are abusive as individuals. That is, they are abusing or improperly/unfairly using power as people, not as "the priesthood" but happen to be priesthood hold...

Re: Daily Scripture Study

I agree with both you and Heber. I have not daily studied scriptures in a number of years, but I do read scriptures. When my faith crisis hit full on I was daily reading scriptures along with the other Primary answers. I gave up after awhile because it seemed to be making no difference. I have not l...

Re: How can I enjoy staying?

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing. I think the standard advice applies: Take it slow (you seem to be doing so), focus on what you do believe (the core of the gospel is a great thing to focus on), and don't dump all at once. In your case don't dump all at once means don't throw the baby out...

Re: BYU and Cheap Tuition

FWIW I don't think any starving Africans' tithing is actually used to fund BYU, temples, etc., unless you consider it an equal small percentage of each tithing dollar goes to each of the things tithing pays for. The US and Canada actually subsidize the rest of the world, particularly South America, ...

Re: BYU and Cheap Tuition

Just to be clear, BYU is not why I pay tithing, nor do I pay on gross (but that's nobody's business). I don't mind that I subsidize education at BYU because I believe in education as well. Generally my kids have benefited from their educations there, even the one who struggled mightily with the cult...

Re: Miracles and the Availability Heuristic

What is a miracle? Is something that is improbable but not impossible (like getting heads 10 times in a row on a coin toss) a miracle? A child in the ward suffers a serious injury or disease. Doctors don't think she'll live. But priesthood blessings, hundreds of prayers and a ward fast later, she f...

Re: BYU and Cheap Tuition

I agree with Dande and LH. The benefit part (to the church) of the cost/benefit analysis seems phenomenal and well worth the cost. I'm not going to complain. All four of my kids have gone to BYU for cheaper than they could have gone to a state school here in the east. In my state tuition is very clo...

Re: Miracles and the Availability Heuristic

As I have pondered this I have realized that what others consider to be miracles probably don't meet my own definition or standard for what a miracles is. I think I have set a very high standard but I don;t think that's either right or wrong. Example 1: The closing prayer at church requests we all t...

Re: So, help me figure out Home Teaching

My own home teacher is the HPGL. We are friends and go out to dinner on occasion but otherwise don't "hang." When he assigned himself he did ask what I wanted and I told him I did not expect a monthly visit or any visit at all for that matter and that I'd let him know if I need something. He has nev...
