Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

I have known families and individuals that would be very well served learning some of these skills. OTOH, I am not sure that these skills are really leadership skills in the stirctest sense. And I'm not sure everyone wants or needs those skills. Sometimes I think we try to make people into somethin...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

Question I'd like to put out there: Do you think the LDS Church is effective in cultivating good, strong leadership skills? In general, no. I think there are some general leadership skills that apply to all areas of life, some that apply to professions, and others that apply to church leadership. I...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

I think it is fair to say that there is a lack of training for our leadership and this is a function of our lay clergy. It seems to me that our leaders' leadership styles are a reflection of 1) church culture and policies, 2) their personalities, and 3) their profession (and professional training) ...

Re: Why do you stay?

1) I guess I consider my relationship mostly "healthy." I suppose it depends on the definition of healthy. It's alive and not in intensive care at the moment though. There are certainly things I disagree with, I rarely go to Sunday School, etc. And sometimes even something kind of old that I thought...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

So I finally went and did my survey. Obviously I know some of what I suggested won't fly (ie they aren't going to remove Praise to the Man no matter how many of us suggest it). But I found something a little curious about the wording of some of the questions: What currently included hymns or songs, ...

Re: The Millenium

I don't think Isiah was talking about Christ or the Millennium, he was talking about the (then) current political situation and speaking truth to power. The bottom line is that we have taken a whole bunch of scriptures out of context and tried to weld everything together into a giant narrative abou...

Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

I'm a do no harm guy also SD. If he brought up Fanny Alger I'd talk about it. And I might fall into the a trap if he were "baiting" me to talk about my unorthodox/heterodox views by being very assertive with his orthodox views. I think your earlier assessment of just avoiding religious discussion wi...

Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

Calling a "friend" to repent has the connotation of "I know what's right & you don't". Or "I'm in a position to judge right & wrong & you are definitely wrong & need to change." Personally, I think it can be useful and a sign of a solid friendship, if one feels comfortable enough to call the other ...

Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

The church just changed HT & VT to "ministering". It seems like a kinder & more compassionate program in theory. There is also the Recovery Program. When someone confesses that they have a specific problem, are they called to repent? Of course not. (I could be wrong.) The more I think about this, t...

Re: My Tentative Conclusion about gospel convos with Traditional Believers

I still maintain there are lines that, when crossed, marginalize you more than others. One is not going to church for no good reason, another is non-payment of tithing at all, another is not holding a TR, yet another is obvious WoW violations like drinking caffeinated coffee, smoking etcetera. Peop...
