Re: A Thread For Talks and Lessons

A recent talk, pretty much verbatim. Like most of us, I’m not one that feels the Spirit all the time. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I experience what I think is the feeling of the Spirit several times per day or for extended periods of time in a day. Other times I can go days without ...

Re: The Gospel of Checklists

This is one of my favorite quotes and I share it regularly in talks and in classes. How do we become true disciples of Jesus Christ? The Savior Himself provided the answer with this profound declaration: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” This is the essence of what it means to be a true discipl...

Re: The Gospel =/= The Church

I think we differ a bit from there Beefster. I don't necessarily believe there is a necessity of "priesthood authority" to baptize, etc., and that the ordinances are really only symbolic anyway. I agree with the idea that the ordinances are purely symbolic- at least the ritualism behind them. I bel...

Re: Why hold the line on this?

How long until beards are unbanned? As it stands now, probably well less than half the professors enforce the rule. My son at BYU tells me the same thing about beards. He says it is not enforced at the testing center anymore either. But he also told me a close friend of his who has a beard card was...

Re: The Gospel of Checklists

I agree with Dande that checklists (and the rules that often accompany them) are mostly human desires. And I'm sure we're not the only church or religion that uses them, formally or informally. But, I am more like Beefster with the rest. The Pharisees were apparently frequently criticized by Jesus f...

Re: The Gospel =/= The Church

The idea of the church and the gospel being separate is one of my relatively few soapbox issues. Our theology actually makes it clear - we believe/teach that the gospel has always existed. I do believe the gospel is eternal, and it is, as you point out Beefster, very simple and all about the Savior ...

Re: Shana Tova - Happy Rosh Hashanah

I really like the symbolic significance of the High Holy Days. I particularly like this idea of a way to "repent." Happy Rosh Hoshana.

Great news! I'm glad for you. One of my biggest regrets is not participating in some of these "milestone" events for my own children.

Re: The 1/3 of the Host of Heaven

I think that God is a lot less compassionate and infinitely loving than what we tell kids in Primary. Me, too. I think Paul the Apostle might agree with you too. He talks about how it is God's perogative to create one vessel for honor and another for dishonor. He is the creator, it is His decision....

Re: The 1/3 of the Host of Heaven

It seems to me that we are talking about spirits that existed in the pre-mortal life and postulating about their eternal destiny in the post mortal life. My experience here has led me to believe that both pre-mortal and post-mortal realms are highly speculative and that not much is known about them...
