Re: Are we a church of volunteers, assignments or covenants?

In the past month I've heard each of those. I prefer volunteers but they are all accurate at different times. Being a church of covenants or a church of assignments makes me feel like we have no options but to do as we are told without regard for personal circumstances. I can't quite figure out the ...

Re: Best Way to Convince Spouse of Tithing Surplus

Don't try to convince someone of your belief. It never works. Share your concerns then step back and wait. I second this advice and I'll share what happened with me and my wife. A few years ago I floated the idea of changing how we tithe and I talked about that there's no formal definition of tithi...

Re: If Church's stance on Gays is an Issue for you, how do you Deal with it?

Also, by refusing to use the word "Gays". I would never says "Straights", so I never say "Gays". "Homosexual people" is longer, but it is much more accurate, kind, and non-dismissive in nature. I know you meant NO negativity or disrespect in what you typed, but recognizing the little ways we margin...

Re: If Church's stance on Gays is an Issue for you, how do you Deal with it?

This is a real issue for me because I've seen firsthand the negative impact it has on gay youth. I'm not sure this is entirely logical - but it seems somewhat hypocritical for a parent to tell their LGBT child "the church is my ideal so I choose to be in it but I understand if you don't." To me it s...

Re: Word of Wisdom - Experiment

Interesting article excerpt from the Apr 2 Wall Street Journal: Psychiatrists and therapists don’t often ask this question. But a growing body of research over the past decade shows that a healthy diet—high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and unprocessed lean red meat—can prevent depressio...

Re: The creation

"Ties go to science" in my opinion. In other words if there is conflict go with science. Religion and Science are parallel paths both searching for Truth (capital T) and both have detours and backtracks but at least good scientists will admit when they are wrong. Therefore: I believe evolution is sc...

Re: One Year Waiting Period Work Around

This is a very interesting idea. I'm curious to hear from an attorney if a 2nd legal marriage on the same day actually means anything, or if it's a ring ceremony from the law's perspective.

Re: True Forgiveness

Thanks for this post. I think I read this on this forum and it has helped me: Sometimes the person we have to forgive is God.

Also for me forgiveness means learning to set boundaries which is along the lines of what others have said.

Re: Word of Wisdom - Experiment

Coffee? Tea? I dunno. Fruits and vegetables are good for you? I'd say that's common sense, even for its time. I'd say that Coffee and Tea may not actually be part of the WoW. I'd also contend that veggies and fruits as we think of them today were luxuries in the 1840s. For example people would get ...

Re: Word of Wisdom - Experiment

Hello Dande, Yes I agree that the WoW is a work in progress, probably like much of the rest of the church, but I do think the WoW is generally a good recommendation- it's how we enforce it that I have a problem with. It seems like science finds one thing is good, then 20 years later it's bad, and it...
