Re: How do I talk to my wife about my faith crisis?

JB, Before anything else, let me say that I'm sorry you are going through this. It's tough; there is just no way around that. Don't talk to your wife until you've had a chance to absorb some differing perspectives from this group. Many of us have navigated this same issue with different approaches a...

Re: New Sunday School - Not.

My vote, actually, would be for GD1 and GD2. However, there is a practical way to divide that isn't entirely driven by popularity: Each week, us teachers have to consolidate down from two weeks of lessons from home study, into one lesson of SS study. Could just say, Class A always focuses on the fir...

Re: New Sunday School - Not.

One challenge with having two competing GD classes would be people gravitating to the class with their favorite teacher. Maybe people's favorite teacher comes out in the wash, some prefer person A's style, other people prefer person B's style, but it could be an issue if you get a really good teach...

Re: New Sunday School - Not.

I have made note of those positive things, OON. And I agree, the stuff, especially church leader quotes, is way ahead of the old manual which was way out of date. I like no BRM (whom Givens regularly throws under the bus in his books) and even Talmadge and JtC was not all great - I don't miss it. I...

Re: From whence comes conscience?

Should one pay attention to one’s conscience? Yes, if they want to. Should one see conscience as coming from God even though it differs so widely between individuals? Yes, if they want to. Is it healthier to trust your conscience or to challenge why you feel the way you do about certain things? Som...

Re: New Sunday School - Not.

FWIW, I think the new material is light years ahead of what we used to have. Some thoughts on it: - The two manuals (home and teacher) have been greatly updated to use quotes from modern leaders. Gone are the quotes from George Q Cannon era leaders. - There are only two lessons that refer to Jesus t...

Re: "Abstain from all appearance of evil."

Curt, I like it. I think it's a much better approach than the traditionally misconstrued notion. It's often been interpreted as "Don't do stuff that might make you look like you aren't 100% righteous... like, don't hold the door for an old lady who is walking into the liquor store, because someone m...

Re: Holding Past Actions Against People and Organizations

The Church still has plenty of issues. However, I find it helpful to keep in mind that the CURRENT Church Leadership is a different group of people from PAST Church Leadership. Are the current leaders responsible for the Ban, polygamy, the Oath of Vengence? Do THEY need to apologize or is it OK for ...

Re: Rome Temple

I didn’t mind Moroni so much until he usurped the original angel on the Nauvoo Temple. Why's Moroni become the symbol of our church? We don't like to put up crosses, because of idolatory, but non-members see his statue all over the place. The Church needed a brand logo. This is common in today's wo...
