Re: When you feel the need to apologize for the church

When I marched in a Pride Parade with Mormons Building Bridges, my message wasn't an apology. It was that, "Hey, I hear you and I'm with you and I'm trying be make a change in the Church." There were a lot of very appreciative responses.

Re: How to ask in faith without feeling jerked around

In that light, Christ's sacrifice wasn't about helping us avoid suffering, it's about teaching us how to handle suffering with grace. Another story meant to teach us ways that we can do what Christ did. There is a thought among some modern scholars that the new testament concept of salvation which ...

Re: How to ask in faith without feeling jerked around

One Atheist's perspective: Religion, spirituality, scripture, repentance, thanksgiving, reconciliation, relationship with God/Christ, forgiveness, prayer... these have nothing to do with what is in yonder heavens and everything to do with what is in our own hearts. According to the author of Luke, J...

Re: Joseph Smith wasn't actually a Polygamist...

Yes, but 1835 Section 101 was written and presented as a policy not a revelation. It was placed in the end-matter of the D&C after a section titled "Appendix" and right before Section, you guessed it, 102, which was a declaration of the views of the Church on governments and laws. Not saying it wasn...

Re: Joseph Smith wasn't actually a Polygamist...

There have been a few threads over the years that have discussed this article. Here's one: http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4986 Here's a quote from another thread that touched on whether D&C 132/Polygamy originated with JS: Well, JS was the author of polygamy, if not of Sec 132. Nauvoo-...

Re: Tribalism and Apostasy

I consider myself a guest at church. It's not my religion/organization to change. I try to help modernization along, but I always do it by seeking rationality, not by trying to force my view onto them. It is their tribe, after all. I can tell you that tribalism is the impetus for the formation of re...

Re: On DFU Making it Back to the FP or Becoming Pres

Thanks, DJ. A prior interesting case in age was Abraham O. Woodruff. He was called to the Q12 at the age of 25 while his dad was President of the Church. At the time, he was 14 years younger than anyone ahead of him in the quorum, which in today's world would have all-but-guaranteed his ascension to...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

Let's not make any mistake. This move marginalizes Uchtdorf. The FP speaks about 3 times each in GC. The Q12 each speak only once. Yeah, you are right. Also, FP members CONDUCT GC meetings. Collectively, they are the face of the Church. I looked back at GC's of the past to see how this plays out us...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

There can be some consistency knowing Oaks is helping the 1st Pres now, and will likely continue soon-ish. In fact, there is a certain way of looking at all this... the simplest way... that removes the concept that DFU was kicked over being too nice or that the Church is getting back to hard-line t...

On DFU Making it Back to the FP or Becoming Pres

The seniority sits like this at the moment: President RMN: 93 DHO: 85 MRB: 89 JRH: 77 HBE: 84 DFU: 77 So, can DFU become President someday? Absolutely. He'd have to outlive a group that is at least 7 years older, plus one guy that is his same age. Is there any upcoming situation that could see him r...
