Re: New First Presidency of the church

There can be some consistency knowing Oaks is helping the 1st Pres now, and will likely continue soon-ish. In fact, there is a certain way of looking at all this... the simplest way... that removes the concept that DFU was kicked over being too nice or that the Church is getting back to hard-line t...

On DFU Making it Back to the FP or Becoming Pres

The seniority sits like this at the moment: President RMN: 93 DHO: 85 MRB: 89 JRH: 77 HBE: 84 DFU: 77 So, can DFU become President someday? Absolutely. He'd have to outlive a group that is at least 7 years older, plus one guy that is his same age. Is there any upcoming situation that could see him r...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

Fwiw, historically, the general practice has been like the current situation: the senior members of the 12 serving in the FP, with an "acting president" of the Q12. Elder Uchtdorf was a notable exception. That's not entirely accurate when you take into account when these men were added to the FP. I...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

Let's not make any mistake. This move marginalizes Uchtdorf. The FP speaks about 3 times each in GC. The Q12 each speak only once. Yeah, you are right. Also, FP members CONDUCT GC meetings. Collectively, they are the face of the Church. It was interesting to me, during the announcement, DFU didn't ...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

kate5, FWIW, I took Rich Alger's comment about pruning the tree to refer to flaws in the Church (ex: practice of polygamy, 1890... women not allowed to speak in SM, late 1960's... the Ban, 1978... closed access to historical information, 2005+). When I read it again, I'm not 100% sure, but that was ...

Re: New First Presidency of the church

Some thoughts: - Replacing DFU with DHO in the FP doesn't really bode well as we look forward to two new Apostles in April. I expect that they will be a bit less open and a bit more retrench-oriented than we might have hoped. - I note that RMN put the oldest Apostles into all the main positions. The...

Re: The Legacy of Thomas S Monson

You could add that they also took strides toward more inclusion of women with the a) the elevation of Ward council as the decision-making body b) alternating General Priesthood Meeting and General Relief Society (assuming that happened, I got that from a source that hasn't always been reliable) c) ...

Re: The Legacy of Thomas S Monson

SD, great topic, I'm glad you brought this up. I'll give three thoughts below about his legacy, but want to address this first: We did see a retrenchment in excommunication of contrarian leaders You termed them "contrarian leaders". I don't see how the church could do anything other than excommunica...

Re: FP under RMN Presidency

Now that we are getting closer (FP to be announced either tomorrow or Monday), I'll pull out a few of the things I've been thinking this week. I'm thinking more and more that RMN moves DFU to 1st Counselor and promotes a new, younger Apostle to fill the 2nd Counselor. It just makes sense to bring (r...

Re: Gospel Topics Essays: Race and the Priesthood

sjsrsee, Welcome to the forum. For myself, I have found it useful to step back and see things from a bit of distance. Rather than try to reconcile everything, I try to recognize that people are not infallible and they are not consistent; taking divergent paths at different times and places. Doing so...
