Re: Very good post about "what I wish Mormons knew about those that leave"

When that pain is expressed, there is an implication that the pain is my fault anyway, so it’s mine to deal with. I felt that this line was insightful. We sometimes say that it was us that changed - not them. Yes, we did change but that does not mean that it is our fault that we changed. Just sayin...

Re: New Members of YW and RS boards Announced - Big Step

Fantastic news! I am not really sure what the board does but I am excited nonetheless! Any diversity we can get in our governing bodies will make us into a more nimble and relevant organization.

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

I reserve the right to resign in the future, if I just can't stay over some policy or doctrine and I feel a kinship with those who have or will. I have said repeatedly that I would resign if one of my children came out as gay. This to me would be a show of solidarity with my child. Not to say that ...

The best part of this weeks meeting was the Stake Relief Society President extolling the success lesson's from the creator of Spanx. Loved it.
I would just be happy if I could work the word "Spanx" into my SM talk.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses, return and report

I am by no means an expert of Jehovah Witnesses - just sharing observations from my experience. Watchtower: For a time I was somewhat jealous of this publication. It seemed to have articles that were scholarly with footnotes. I got the impression that I was learning about a variety of topics (Scienc...

Re: An Update About My Faith

Thank you for the update ILC. I was once told by a Pastor from a Baptist church, "You can be saved and be Mormon, but it won't be the Mormonism that saves you." It struck me in a profound way and I still ponder on it from time to time. We rejoice with you in your successes and support you in your un...

Re: Ex-Bishop Up for Disciplinary Council Regarding Minor Interview Outspeak

I believe that there is a trajectory for many individuals that stand up publicly to make a change in the church and it usually leads outside of the church. This to me seems quite natural really. Once you become a public figure for change you will likely receive more and more exposure to stories of "...

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses, return and report

DW and I met with a very nice JW couple for several months. Observations: 1) JW beliefs are generally internally consistent. Looking from the inside there is nothing that seems off. They have a system of belief based on the bible with particular emphasis on some verses over others (just like other C...

Re: Joseph Smith makes me angry

Internally, emotions come from attachments. The greater the attachment, the greater the emotion. Stalin? No attachment, no emotion. Joseph Smith? Historically we've made him the linchpin of the church. People sacrificed a lot for his vision, there's an attachment. There's skin in the game. Yes, thi...

Re: Joseph Smith makes me angry

Stalin yes - one of the biggest mass murderers in history. Possibly killed more than Hitler. I think that proves my point. I am not angry at Stalin. I barely think about him at all. When I do I most often think about him in the context as a ally in WW2. Even if I remember his atrocities, I do not t...
