Re: Creationism vs Evolutionism in Faith Transition... Or Why Do I Feel Like I Lost the Arguement?

My children ask me about these sorts of questions all the time. I usually present a variety of schools of thought on the subject. I encourage them if they have their own theories (I figure, "can't be any crazier than what everyone else believes"). I 10 year old son is on the autistic spectrum and is...

Re: Covenant Keeping

We want to know for ourselves that if we do something, bad things that happen to other people around us won't happen to us. I believe this is one of the two great needs fulfilled by religion. Life is full of risks, uncertainty, and just plain bad luck. At the same time life is not obviously meaning...

Re: Feeling Traumatized at Church?

I had a traumatic experience in the stillbirth of our third child. That is in no way the fault of the church. I did however have an unrealistic expectation of living a semi-charmed life based in part on LDS teachings. I liken this to being told that a particular road was completely safe for worthy c...

Re: How do you measure success in "ministering"

When did home teaching first start anyway? From what I have read it started in the Mormon Reformation period of 1856-7. "Reformation" here means that the saints were asked to reform their own lives to better follow the gospel. In my mind, The LDS church during those few years went through a sort of...

Re: Kirby nails another one - Mormon merit badges

The LDS church believes in being judged according to our works. The following is found in the preface to D&C 76: It appeared self-evident from what truths were left, that if God rewarded every one according to the deeds done in the body the term ‘Heaven,’ as intended for the Saints’ eternal home, mu...

Re: Is it worth it raising daughters in the church?

But it has been my experience that a person can have decision making power without being the one making the money. Right now I choose to stay home with my young children, but my husband and I both very much think of the money he makes as "our money" and we both control it equally. I think a lot dep...

I do not feel that I know enough about scientology to comment.

I understand that one of the hallmarks of cults is to try to isolate you from non-cult support structures of family and friends.

Re: Well, there went that plan.

I would contact the bishop right away to let him know that you are having panic attacks and are really sorry but just cannot fulfill that calling. If you can do so before it is announced there may be minimal negative consequences. In my home we have a rule never to agree to anything the same day tha...

Re: The whens, wheres, and whys of speaking up at church

I try to limit my comments in the class setting to advocating for more charity and less judgment for all. I do get the feeling that my comments are not always appreciated. Similar to relationships, you can only have so many emotional withdrawals before your comments begin to feel grating. People go...
