How to not drive people away from the church

The following blog post was linked in another discussion. I felt that it deserved its own topic post. https://mormondom.com/why-people-leave-the-church-and-never-come-back-410e3e817a3a Recently DW and I were having a conversation with the RS president about a fellow sister that had gone inactive yea...

Re: Convert trying to stay

Welcome. I saw a Facebook post yesterday on "Why members leave and never return." It was an awesome message, so I ended up using it for my home teaching message. It was really good. I hope we can be more welcoming to all. https://mormondom.com/why-people-leave-the-church-and-never-come-back-410e3e8...

Re: My Nephew Met a GA

Elder Scott came to the MTC to give a talk. When he visited our mission in South America, he gave the same talk. Much later this talk was published in the Ensign. From my notes on the first two renditions of the talk and comparison with the published version I can see differences. What I think I lea...

Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

According to Mormon theology/practice, I am the patriarch of our home. Can I give a patriarchal blessing? Yes! You can also record it for posterity. It just will not be retained in the church archives. I am fascinated by the practice of Lucy Mack Smith to give blessings to people that would visit h...

Re: Doubting my Patriarchal Blessing

I desire very much for my son to receive the priesthood from me. I want him to be included in my priesthood line of authority that includes my father and grandfather. What does it mean for me to put my hands over his head and say some words. It could mean nothing. It could be quite significant. For ...

Re: What My Faith Journey Taught Me

For what it's worth, I would say close to half or more of the original church structure, culture, and even doctrine has been dismantled and replaced at this point - and I see that as a positive thing. I agree. I read once an LDS scholar apologist explaining that one of the criteria for church doctr...

Re: Quinn's Research on LDS Church Finances

A stipend is sometimes given to students or research assistants so that they can be unencumbered with making a living and wholly invested in study or research. I do believe that the church sees the GA's wages as a stipend or living allowance. They are not tied to seniority or productivity or perform...

Re: My Temple Wedding Adventure

Congratulations SD on successfully "launching" your daughter into adulthood.

As for the crying - I cry during some emotional moments in movies. Weddings are not exactly my thing but I can get how some people would find it very emotional.

Re: A Thread For Talks and Lessons

I like how your compared testimonies to the 3 little pigs and building materials. I have often thought of my FC or assumptive world collapse as the fall of a building after an earthquake.

Re: Parable of the Macaroni Art

I love the parable of the macaroni art! I also have another way to look at that. Many times the gospel plan is presented as a puzzle. There is a master plan and one correct way to put the pieces together. We in life can arrange our puzzle pieces into more or less of the paint by numbers pattern give...
