Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching!

I think my ward, and stake actually, are much like Curt's. Our discussion have been pretty good. We talked about a more holistic view today - taking care of more than just physical or spiritual needs but social/psychological needs. IN a nutshell, just plain being friends.Visits were not mentioned o...

My only concern is the possibility of "easy authority" being used to perform non-consensual marriages on the sly.
What do you mean by a non-consensual marriage?

Re: Best Way to Convince Spouse of Tithing Surplus

Going in with the goal of convincing or expecting a specific outcome is probably a bad idea but that's just my reaction to the title of the thread. Here's a link from the February 2008 New Era that I was going to share in the other thread: Do I pay tithing on my income before taxes are taken out or...

Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching?

Nibbler said this phrase in the subject line in another post and it kept coming back to me. Today epitomized this. They changed the name from home teaching to ministering, but they used the same guilt trip and said we need to "minister" to everyone in the next quarter. The word "visit" kept being us...

Re: Urgent Request for Input

Wow! Some good things here I am seeing some of the scriptures in a new way -- like the personal tension that Adam and Eve faced. That one is particularly powerful as it shows that to navigate the personal tension in commandments, there is often sacrifice. But out of that sacrifice, comes growth. Als...

Re: Navigating from the Dark Night

Does anyone have any insight? I really appreciate this forum and have been lurking here. Issue 1: Tithing settlement meeting -- possible solution -- don't go. Plain and simple. I haven't gone for years. They never haul me in for it, Issue 2: Leadership requests for explanations (at any time). You h...

Re: Filled With Charity Even When Not Living Church Commandments

I had an experience somewhat like this about a decade ago. It still forms the basis of my belief structure. I choose to believe that my experience came as a message of love, acceptance, and encouragement from loving Heavenly Parents. I choose to believe the same about your experience. I like the im...

Re: Filled With Charity Even When Not Living Church Commandments

It's tough for me to comment on it. I do have faith in spiritual experiences, so that is why i continue to say I have a testimony of the church, in spite of my commitment problems with it. At the same time, I have found that when I feel deeply about something, my own depth of feeling can create emot...

Re: Urgent Request for Input

Sorry I missed it. Quite frankly, I find Fowler's Stages of faith so academic they aren't a lot of use to practitioners -- unless you wordsmith them to be accessible to the average person. I would consider using a different model. Session 3: For the classification of faith crises, I would consider u...

Re: Getting ordained online

I think it's a nice counter balance to the travesty of the one year waiting period. I'd do it. Bishops perform civil weddings when asked...the reason they can do it is they are recognized as ministers by the legal system, so why can't you also become legal and not be dissing the priesthood?
