Re: I got through teaching Gospel Doctrine yesterday....

What did you feel the main take-away message from the lesson ended up being for most people in the class on this topic? That God requires sacrifice before sending miracles is to a) make sure the receiver of the miracle ascribes the miracle to God, not chance or their own efforts. b) ensure the mira...

Re: Nelson's Version of PoX as Revelation in Seminary Manual

From the perspective of people like us, who view the Church as " sometimes maybe mostly sort-of true ", but also "sometimes maybe sort of not", I completely understand the resentment.    SMMSOT -- sometimes, maybe, mostly, sort-of true! I may have to weave that into my internet...

I got through teaching Gospel Doctrine yesterday....

So, I accidentally ended up teaching Lesson 28 "After the fire comes the still small voice". I didn't feel at all qualified to teach the lesson -- first it was Old Testament and there is a lot of history there I don't know, and frankly, didn't care to research. I wasn't too much into the discussion ...

Re: My Lonely Search for God

For me, it was partly how Church members can treat each other -- crossing into the dark side of selfishness, injury, pleasure in seeing others suffer, etcetera -- that pushed me to question what I hear at church. I came at this conclusion not from prison, but from observing certain leaders and membe...

Re: Hard Sayings and Safe Spaces: Amazing BYU Devotional

One thing that's difficult for me, with the Church and religion in general, is how "religiously" it is followed. Any opposition is viewed as "of the devil". Criticizing or disagreeing with leadership (past or present) is viewed as apostasy. It's really difficult to come out and say "I don't believe...

Re: Hard Sayings and Safe Spaces: Amazing BYU Devotional

Bro Huntsman specifically pointed out, he wasn't referring to "safe spaces" in the way it is commonly used in society. He meant it in "creating environments that are, on the one hand, places of faith where we can seek and nurture testimony, but are also, on the other, places where our sisters and b...

Re: Kirby and missions

I agree that it's not for everyone. Serving a mission is a lot like having a sales position. I know people will argue that it's not - but it is -- you have to make cold calls, you have to convince people to do things -- granted, you have the Spirit, and salespeople don't, but it's very much like sal...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

They are worth it to me for reasons that deal both with this life and my hope for the next life - but mostly for this life. My heritage is Mormon. I really don't want to create a totally new heritage solely for myself and my descendants by leaving (and have to deal with all the accompanying issues)...

Re: Are My Beliefs Really My Own?

This came from a conversation with a friend earlier today. I think it applies perfectly to this site, as well. If I don't understand the positive and negative implications of my beliefs, I don't understand my beliefs - and, in reality, they are not fully mine. Thoughts? I don't consider it accurate...

Re: Would you want to be a leader in the celestial kingdom?

I will be whatever is needed wherever I end up, if there is an afterlife similar to what we teach. I don't worry about it or even think about it any more than necessary. I try to focus on this life, since it is the only thing that is "real" right now. When I read this part in bold, I thought "the c...
