Does Programmed Service Build Community?

I have a question -- we know that our RS has a program where if someone is sick, the RS takes meals over to the family who is experiencing the sickness or other trial. It's a way of showing you care. But if everyone (or most people) get this kind of service, does this really build community? To me, ...

Re: Interesting Convo at church

I agree. I have taken a leadership position in my work, and its kind of drugerous at times -- and then I go back to my non-profit leadership and I'm pulling all nighters to meet self-imposed deadlines for no pay at all. It goes to show how much FUN a person is missing if they limit themselves only t...

Re: President Oaks and the Priesthood Restriction

I like the idea that the church got justice for our past actions. For years, it bothered me that we had the blights of plural marriage, blacks and the priesthood, mountain meadows etcetera on our history. It was an impediment to progress. Now, based on posts here, I see it as a form of natural disci...

Re: Two Hour Church -- Rumor or Work in Process?

See, I would like to keep it at 3 meetings, but nix half or more of sacrament meeting. One, really good speaker and then maybe a short youth speaker an the sacrament. Keep the other two meetings as they are interactive, if done well, and provide an opportunity for teaching and training....Too many ...

Two Hour Church -- Rumor or Work in Process?

OK, now I'm hearing excitement about 2 hour church from active people in my area. This has always been a wish on StayLDS where many of us find the experience generally unstimulating and repetitive. But now, to hear active people talking about it on social media and face to face has me wondering. Is ...

Re: Meeting with the Branch President

Another thing you can do is encourage him to take a long term view. If you can't get away from the lack of belief you are feeling, indicate there are shades of belief and people change all the time. Tell the story of what I experienced once -- a guy in my HP Quorum who wouldn't give me the time of d...

Interesting Convo at church

So, I'm holding teachers council. A former Bpric member comes to the council and says "I don't like teaching and don't want to be a teacher, and don't really like teacher's council and don't want to be a leader anymore". Everyone was working in groups at the time so this was a sidebar conversation. ...

Re: When a GA Listens: or, Presiding in the Home

I found her exchange with the GA to be both encouraging (she has the patience of a saint!) and disheartening. How on earth can he require this much work to still end at an unsatisfactory conclusion? He still doesn't get it . And she has to go out to meet him in his wrong position so many times. It ...
