Re: Handbook Highlights from John Dehlin

I also noted in the section about civil marriage they tiptoe around the civil marriage immediately before temple sealing and completely ignore the possibility that someone in that situation might actually consider being married by someone other than a church official. As far as I can tell, a legal ...

Re: Scouting in Bankruptcy

Frankly I think it no coincidence that the loss of 400,000 Scouts and all the associated fees came right before this filing. From a financial perspective, I had the same thought. Tough to weather a financial crisis when you have lost that amount of income. The article is vague about finances -- say...

Re: My farewell to StayLDS

Thanks Brian for all you have done on StayLDS. One lasting impact was your statement "The sooner you get on your own clock the happier you will be" or similar. I have written and read tens of thousands of characters on this forum and that one sticks out as one of the top five. It was with that state...

Re: Handbook Highlights from John Dehlin

I was surprised by a number of these items. I like the fact that apostasy is no longer considered grounds for a membership council. It makes me wonder if that one is in place given the fact that airing opposing opinions is common on the Internet now -- perhaps it's the church just accepting the fact...

Scouting in Bankruptcy

Here is the latest on the decline of scouting. There seems to be some question about whether it will continue to survive....

The Name of the Church

Spawned by another thread when I discussed Russell M. Nelson and his hustle in making large changes to the church. He advocated getting rid of Mormon in favor of the long, official name of the church. I wish RMN would have a revelation that the name of the church in digital, latter-days should be re...

Re: Priesthood confusion.

Vestiges of the old way of doing things. At one time we had Priesthood Leadership meetings. Maybe we still do -- these are just a reincarnation of those meetings. When RMN (affectionately referred to a Hustle M Nelson given all the changes he implemented in his early time in office) combined the HP ...

Re: Struggling with Understanding the Truth of the Spirit

Members receive the "Holy Ghost". What makes that so much more special than just the "light of Christ" that we preach that everyone has? I know people that don't have the "Holy Ghost" and feel the Spirit more than I do. They are of other religions or none at all and they are very in tune and seemed...

Re: Struggling with Understanding the Truth of the Spirit

Thanks everyone -- the majority of you seem to think the Spirit is much less of an absolute truth-giver, and more of a guide toward goodness. And he can guide you toward good experiences even if those experiences have untruths, partial truths or other less-than-true features. This to me, explains ho...

Re: We can't get married

I guess I can't comment confidently on the sealing aspect of it -- it's something someone in the "knowing hierarchy" of the church would have to answer definitively. But taking the perspective of a leader with an agenda to further the "aims" of the church. I wouldn't give a definitive answer in this...
