If the children are over a certain age they tend to be removed.

Re: An Introduction to Zen Buddhism

I can recommend Stephen Batchelor's Buddhism without Belief. He discusses many of the ideas and practices of Buddhism while rejecting the "reincarnation" aspects of it. I found it easier to integrate some of the Buddhist ideas into my own Mormon theology via his secular perspective on Buddhism. It'...

How can I help divorce?

(For the record I am unmarried, so this is not advice for myself. I don't relate to this in the sense that I have lived it.) A friend of mine is separated and getting a divorce next year. He had only seen his children twice in the course of a year. They are very young. His wife has moved out of town...

Re: What IS the Priesthood and why is it needed?

Why do you think people want blessings before surgeries? Do they think God will be bound by a priesthood person asking for blessings so he will whisper to the soul of the surgeon or guide his/her hand? I think it's related to anxiety. We ask for a blessing because we have anxiety and the blessing h...

Re: 11-year old Deacons and Beehives

That's super interesting. Growing up, I always thought that the age for getting the priesthood, and advancing in the offices, was tied to unchanging, doctrinal revelation. Turns out, it is just policy that can be changed whenever "those in charge" see fit. This change does make quite a lot more sen...

Re: I was almost a school shooter

I was bullied. I remember urinating on all the urinal handles in my school bathroom. For a moment I thought, "what if the next person to come in here has not been mean to me?" I stuffed that thought down by rationalizing that even if they hadn't been mean, they hadn't been nice either. They were al...

Re: I was almost a school shooter

I’m convinced that mental illness often contributes, but only because it is exacerbated by isolation and bullying. It's a common factor in these cases. Sandy Hook seems to have had a problem with it for example. If you have a school where everyone looks like Ken and Barbie and then suddenly a Goth ...

Re: An Introduction to Zen Buddhism

There are other differences - in Christianity you only get one shot (maybe not LDS), in Buddhism your soul retutns - 100,000 times or more in some forms of Buddhism. Doing good vs non-harm (subtle difference). Evil as an illusion rather than a reality. Oh and like I say, there are gods in many forms...
