Re: Visitors welcome except at Stake Conference

I don't suffer from the Stake Conference problem as we meet at a stake center. However, when I visit elsewhere I'm acutely aware of the issue. How am I to know when another stake holds its conference? What if I was semi-active? This is all apart from the dead phone number up on the window. And the f...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

I see it two ways. The social scientist half of me thinks there is no way that church leaders can prevent people from shortening the name of the church when it's so freaking long. The name "Mormons" has stuck for decades, and it is unlikely that will change. BUT If this name change is part of an ef...

Visitors welcome except at Stake Conference

Visited a small rural branch in another country, not known for its Mormonism... there is a telephone number listed on the notice outside which doesn't work. No sign of anyone around. I presume it is stake conference, but how am I to know that? The next branch is about a hundred miles away. The LDS c...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

I used to go to a happy clappy church myself some years ago. I used the phrase because I don't know which denomination his new one is; and he was a bit incoherent in telling me.

Re: She Preached The Word

But I love the idea that my daughter is growing up accepting that women can "preach the word" - that they are qualified to do so. Not really a new idea though. Female preachers go back to the 18th century. Earlier if you count Joan of Arc. Our main church in this country has been ordaining women si...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

I maybe shouldn't but I started laughing inwardly once when a new member started bearing his testimony of the Church of Mormon and how he believed our bishop was a true prophet. He had what we charitably call learning difficulties and is a bit of a character. Going back a few years right enough... ...

The early church was extremely volatile. That might be an understatement.

Just saying.

Re: The Bay of a Thousand Names

I think we all try and beat eternity. I wonder if that's partly why we sent out the Voyager space probe... that it may well outlast the human race and that was the real deal, not contacting ET. You see cave art and there are all those hand prints stenciled on the wall... and I wonder what their live...
