Re: Calling It Quits

I'm not going to go into too many personal details other than to say, except for coming home from a mission early, I understand very much the struggles you are facing. I have read the book, "In Queit Desparation" and did not find it helpful. It is one of the better books out there on the s...

Re: Meeting with Bishop

I'm just blunt like this, but I would just politely say that we have decided to attend the other ward. If because of administrative stuff we cannot have callings in that ward, we will at least attend as a family. Just let them know that is the decision you have made and stick with it. They can hem a...

Re: Post-Divorce Update

Addressing Fear #1 - Church discipline of that nature is no cakewalk and you will experience a wide range of emotions. You will be angry and mad at times. It will be humiliating. If you do not view this as a part of your personal spiritual journey, then I would just not confess.

Re: Unfortunate Situation

In all fairness, in response to the inaction of leaders, I don't have a problem with calling someone out. If a leader is acting inappropriately and others choose to do nothing, then people need to know about it. He didn't send it out to the whole stake or to the bishops, just the High Counsel. Hopef...

Re: Baptisms for the dead

I usually come to think about proxy temple work as a symbolic act. We are standing in for the ordinances of salvation for those that cannot complete the ordinances for themselves. Our highest form of worship is literally symbolic of standing in for the Savior, doing His work. I think if we just focu...

Re: General Conference Discussion

Peaceandjoy, I would read Elder Holland's talk slowly - focusing carefully on parsing exactly what he said and, most importantly, to whom he said it. Frankly, you weren't his target audience. It's really, really easy to feel attacked when some of the statements are isolated, but the overall talk wa...

Re: General Conference Discussion

Bridget, Thank you so much for your reply. It really helps to know that others are struggling as me. I, too have read the Book of Mormon and have had no answers. I am so frustrated and lost lately. So his talk didn't help me any. I really wish I had such a strong testimony. It would certainly be ea...

Re: My son is gay.

Ophelia, please tell me you son has received the proper help to help him accept himself in a healthy way. So often when someone leaves the counseling the church offers, they don't seek proper counseling to undo the damage that was caused. I also hope that he feels like he can still have a good relat...

Re: Elder Holland on the "Middle Way"

That is why I love that man. His statements have done more to solidify my testimony than any other GA besides GBH. I think that both of them taught, GBH more in his later years, a doctrine of inclusion. While, for some, it may not be as much inclusion as they were looking for, it is certainly a step...

Re: "Six Destructive D's"

You know, this talk was the only one in the last conference that I had to shut off. I do not like the idea that faith comes only from exact obedience. I don't think that is exactly true. I think this is one of the most damaging ideas taught in the church. We have faith in Christ because we need him ...
