Re: Muhammad by Karen Armstrong
Thanks SamBee, some of those I hadn't thought of. If you don't mind, I'm gonna use a couple of those in a post I'm writing for mormonmatters.org.

Muhammad by Karen Armstrong
DISCLAIMER: I write fairly lengthy reviews, so I apologize for the length of this post. Feel free to skip it if you like. This is Armstrong's second biography of the prophet Muhammad. It is shorter than the first, meant to be a more brief version focused on helping Westerners understand Muhammad, an...

Re: Why Stay lds when you don't live in Utah?
Much of my thoughts have been said, but as a lifelong Utahn, I feel obligated to say something. I have lived in Utah my entire life up until the last two years (I'm 28). Here are my thoughts. I love Utah. I can't help it, I really do. I love the community, the landscape, the outdoors paradise, etc. ...

Re: The Traps of Religion
I agree with Valoel. I do think I understand the point of separation of religion and spirituality, and indeed, that's where many of us are on this site. But, like Valoel, I'm not ready to do away with organized religion. I do think they have their place, even if it's not for many of the NFs and NTs ...

Re: Responsibility towards the ignorant
I dunno...I have taken reserve for now, and talk to all of you as my outlet. But sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't openly be able to talk to my brothers as well. That is, if they're interested (not shoving it down their throats like an over-zealous missionary). I'll repeat my stance that I have fou...

Re: The Traps of Religion
I like that. So is "staying safe" an illusion? We like to think there is safety in certain corners if we'll tuck ourselves into the right spot. I'll bite here. Yes, staying safe is an illusion IMHO. Safe from what? from who? Benjamin Franklin once said: "They who can give up essentia...

Re: Atlas Shrugged - by Ayn Rand
@hawkgrrrl I couldn't have articulated it better. So it sounds like we agree that fundamentally, altruism has a downside, especially when coercion of any kind is involved, but that we are unwilling to throw the altruistic baby out with the bathwater as it were. As to the characters, yes I agree, and...

Atlas Shrugged - by Ayn Rand
I'm not totally sure this book belongs here. But BCC did a post on it, and Rand has a reputation for being anti-religious (while having a supposed cult ironically enough), and her philosophy is interesting from a Mormon perspective so I thought I would add my review here. I just finished the book. I...
